India's superstar batsman Rohit Sharma has been nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country's highest sporting award. Along with him, wrestler Vinesh Fogat, table tennis player Manika Batra, and 2016 Paralympic gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu have also been nominated for the prestigious award.

New Delhi: India's superstar batsman Rohit Sharma has been nominated for the country's highest sporting award, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. Along with him, wrestler Vinesh Fogat, table tennis player Manika Batra, and 2016 Paralympic gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu have also been nominated for the prestigious award.

The decision was taken at a selection panel meeting on Tuesday to decide on the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjun and other national sports awards. The sports minister will now confirm the award. Once confirmed by the Minister, President Ramnath Kovand will present the award. If Rohit Sharma gets the award, he will become the fourth cricketer to do so. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have received Khel Ratna.

The right-handed batsman was nominated for the award by the BCCI in May this year. With the bat, Rohit Sharma has set some records in the 2019 ODI format. He finished the year as the highest run scorer in ODIs, scoring 1490 runs with seven centuries in a single year. This is the highest by any player in a calendar year.

Also, became the strongest batsman in the 2019 ODI World Cup. He was the top scorer with 648 runs and Rohit scored five centuries in the World Cup. He was named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year earlier this year.
