The energy ministry is preparing to make the money available to power distribution companies in the states. For this, the Ministry may submit to the Union Cabinet a proposal attached to the reform-based incentive package scheme.

 However, the Central Government will provide funds to the Power Secretary on the basis of the performance of each DISCOM. A package of Rs 3.12 lakh crore has been proposed under the Reform Based Incentive Scheme Fund. The government's objective in giving an economic package to the power sector is to provide relief to the common man.

Discom of many states and union territories will be privatized

DISCOM of some States and Union Territories will be privatized in the financial year 2020-21 under the Energy Sector Reform Plan. This includes Discom of Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar. Apart from that, Dadarnagar mansion and Daman-Diu disco will also be handed over to a private company. According to government sources, Rs 68,000 crore has been sanctioned by the Rural Electrification Corporation and Power Finance Corporation to the state's DISCOM.

Discom lost Rs 2.28 lakh crore in the last financial year

According to sources, a demand of Rs 1.2 lakh crore can be made along with raising the borrowing limit from the states and union territories. It is hoped that by the end of 2020, the losses of all DISCOMs will be reduced to Rs 1.4 lakh crore. Discom had a loss of Rs 2.28 lakh crore during the financial year 2019-20.

 According to government sources, the state's DISCOM owes Rs 2.63 lakh crore to the power generation and distribution company till June 2020. Of this, Rs 35,042 crore is due to Rajasthan DISCOM, Rs 18,970 crore to Tamil Nadu and Rs 13,715 crore to Uttar Pradesh.
